accidents happen

so... went out into the back "yard" yesterday, and there was a pot with a bunch of tiny little plants growing out of it, and they all looked like tomato plants. odd, i thought, that weeds (we'd planted nothing in any of the pots, and all of them had weeds growing out of them) that looked like tomato plants managed to take over one pot and one pot only.

fast forward to us trying to transplant some lilies into the pot. i pulled the weeds, and they were, in fact, tomato plants (i love that smell...). as it turns out, the pot in question was our compost pot.

we'd tried to compost when we lived in the apartment, but we didn't have enough room, and eventually just gave up because it was winter and it was too cold for composting to take place in such a small vessel anyway. we moved that pot over to the house intact, and left it sitting in the back yard. we figured we'd take care of it later, since we were concentrating on remodeling the kitchen at the time.

well, the compost composted. i didn't know that the stuff in the pot wasn't soil until we figured out that the plants were actually tomatoes (they'd grown from a rotten tomato i'd tried to compost), and i dug into it and found egg shells.

i love the smell of tomato plants. such an odd happy accident. too bad i didn't actually get to plant tomatoes this year...
